Happy Haiku Year!

One of my new year’s resolutions is to write more haiku poems. Although I understand that haikus normally contain a seasonal reference, I like to write haikus about everything.

I was out with friends the other night and I challenged them to give me topics. I insisted that I could write a haiku about any topic they threw at me in less than a minute and a half. No one believed me. Odd, since we were engaged in a heated discussion about ghosts and UFO’s and, without question, they all seemed to believe in both of those! Why were they so skeptical about my haiku skills?

You will be pleased to learn that I delivered on my promise. I wrote a haiku in well under 90 seconds for each of the following topics: Hawaii; earrings; orange; flamingo; and wine. Enjoy!

Hawaii

Hawaii island
is one of our 50 states.
Let’s go there sometime.

Earrings

Earrings are so nice,
whether silver or bright gold,
they make the ears sing.

Orange

Orange, a great word.
It can be a juicy fruit
or a long carrot.

Flamingo

Flamingo, my bird.
You have some pink long feathers
because you eat shrimp.

Wine

Wine is very good
when you drink it in a glass.
Not when people “whine.”

Let’s all write more haiku poems this year!
